Invigorating the Creativity of West Virginians

by Jason B. Keeling

Organizers of the 2009 Create WV Conference are asking the public to jump start the conversations that will take place there by using Twitter, Facebook and blogs to answer this open-ended phrase: "WV, I WILL CREATE..."

Because conferences can tend to offer too many ideas and not enough results, people are being asked to not only talk about bettering their everyday lives and communities, but to actually do something.

In fact, action is creativity, defined as a process in which you cause something to happen. Your response might address a basic task or a complicated endeavor, so long as you do something about it.

Simply place and fill in your response to "WV, I WILL CREATE..." within your Facebook status update, on a blog, or for those that use Twitter.com, place "#createwv" at the end of your tweet(s).

As an organization, Create WV is formally working to address these focus-areas:

  • "WV, I will create...EDUCATION AND TALENT."
  • "WV, I will create...QUALITY OF PLACE."
  • "WV, I will create...ARTS AND CULTURE."
  • "WV, I will create...DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION"
  • "WV, I will create...ENTREPRENEURSHIP."
  • "WV, I will create...TECHNOLOGY."

Obviously, nobody will be policing respondents to complete what they say they'll do, but many will follow through, and that makes the effort worthwhile. Whether or not you attend the conference (Huntington, Oct. 18-20), your response(s) will help establish outcome-oriented thinking, hopefully inspiring yourself and others to act.

Entrepreneurship and Technology

For West Virginia to compete with other states in this new "global economy" a social push for a new education system needs to happen. In our high schools we have our basics (i.e. Language Arts, Math, Science, History, and etc.) however, what about courses in entrepreneurism and how to tap into venture capital or any capital to make a creative idea economic. Or enhancing our science classes to be more project-based, where students can enhance there critical thinking abilities. People at a very young age need the available knowledge of how to use there creativity and the knowledge of how to use the available tools in turning that creativity into something tangible for themselves and the community. We can talk for 20 years about what creative class is, however, if we don't take action and galvinize the social, political, and economic resources we currently have that can invest in ones full human potential, then it's just talk. There are resources already out there that can facilitate entrepreneurship and the research and development of new technology economically tangible for West Virginia. (i.e. Appalachia Powershift Movement, The Jobs Project, and the Inivative School Zones Act) Start networking, quit talking, and become the change you wish to see.
